Cobble Beach

Below Yaquina Head Lighthouse there is a cobble beach that you can explore. A cobble beach is simply a beach made of small round stones, about the size of golf balls. The wave action erodes the "corners" of stones to make them round. The sound of the waves on a cobble beach is weird because the stones actually get moved around. And finally, these stones are really difficult to walk on.

Yaquina Head Lighthouse

As I mentioned yesterday, the visit to Yaquina Head Lighthouse was filled with wind and fog. You are allowed to climb up the lighthouse, but they were limiting the number of people to a few at a time (because of space limitations). Because everyone wanted to get out of the cold wind, there was a line to climb up into the lighthouse. We were impatient and skipped that.

Despite the gloomy weather, there were a few photos that are worth posting. The first two are of the lighthouse itself, with appropriate amounts of fog. The third photo is an attempt to show the wind blowing, using Tammy as an action figure model.

Cape Meares Lighthouse

Cape Meares Ligthouse is located near Tillamook. The first picture is of the lighthouse, the second is a picture of the lens from within the lighthouse and the third is a nearby view.

Petit Manan Island

This is the lighthouse on Petit Manan Island.

Mount Desert Rock

If there ever was an "island" that deserved its name, this is it! Mount Desert Rock is literally a bump of rock that barely juts above sea level. But it is enough to put a lighthouse and a boat house on. And the birds and seals like it.

Great Duck Island

This is the lighthouse on Great Duck Island. If you look closely on the left side of the lighthouse, you will see a group of College of the Atlantic students doing something that I must assume is productive.

Bass Harbor Head Light House

Read all about the Bass Harbor Head Light House. This one is all automated, and you can't go inside. Maybe it was because I was getting tired and my stomach was full, but this lighthouse was somewhat anti-climatic.
